At 700m, very close to the Spanish border, and south of the Douro, Rui Madeira is single-handedly reviving a region’s reputation. He has returned to, and renovated, the winery where he first started honing his craft in Vermiosa. Some of the vines here are exceptionally old such as Fonta Cal and Siria are grown up a mountain near the Spanish border on granite soils packed with silex, which is famed for giving that smoke and gunflint note to wines in the Loire Valley
